MRCOG Part 1: Data Interpretation - Essential Study Guide
This is your essential guide to the Data Interpretation section of the MRCOG Part 1 exam. We built it from our own experience of sitting the exam, the RCOG syllabus and the official reading list. It lists the data interpretation concepts most often tested, section by section.
Why Data Interpretation matters in MRCOG Part 1
Data interpretation is a crucial skill for obstetricians and gynaecologists, enabling accurate diagnosis, effective management, and informed decision-making. In the MRCOG Part 1 exam, data interpretation questions assess your ability to analyse and interpret various types of clinical data, including laboratory results, imaging findings, and statistical data, within the context of obstetrics and gynaecology.
Data Interpretation syllabus, section by section
ILaboratory Investigations
Blood Tests and Microbiology
Full Blood Count (FBC)
- Normal ranges for haemoglobin, white cell count, platelets, MCV, MCH
- Interpretation of abnormal FBC results: anaemia (iron deficiency, dilutional, folate deficiency, B12 deficiency), leucocytosis, thrombocytopenia
- Correlation of FBC results with clinical scenarios
Electrolyte Disturbances
- Causes and clinical manifestations of hyponatraemia, hypernatraemia, hypokalaemia, hyperkalaemia, hypocalcaemia, hypercalcaemia
- Interpretation of electrolyte results in the context of clinical scenarios (e.g., diuretic use, renal impairment)
- Understanding the role of electrolytes in fluid balance
Blood Gas Analysis
- Normal ranges for pH, pCO2, pO2, bicarbonate, base excess
- Interpretation of acid-base disturbances: metabolic acidosis, metabolic alkalosis, respiratory acidosis, respiratory alkalosis
- Identifying the primary disturbance and any compensatory mechanisms
- Understanding the clinical context of blood gas results (e.g., pregnancy, labour)
Microbiological Swab Results
- Interpreting Gram stain results to identify common pathogens (e.g., Neisseria gonorrhoeae)
- Correlating swab results with clinical presentations
Hepatitis and Syphilis Serology
- Interpreting hepatitis B serology results (HBsAg, anti-HBc, anti-HBe, anti-HBs) to determine infection status (acute, chronic, resolved, vaccinated)
- Understanding the significance of hepatitis C antibody and viral RNA results
- Interpreting VDRL and treponemal test results (TPPA, TPHA) in the diagnosis of syphilis
Specialised Tests in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Hormonal Assays
- Interpreting FSH, LH, and progesterone levels in the assessment of ovulation
- Understanding the role of anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) in assessing ovarian reserve
- Interpreting thyroid function tests and autoantibodies
Tumor Markers
- Calculating the Risk of Malignancy Index (RMI) for ovarian cysts
IIIIntrapartum and Postpartum Data Interpretation
Fetal Monitoring and Well-being
Cardiotocograph (CTG) Interpretation
- Assessing baseline fetal heart rate, variability, accelerations, and decelerations
- Categorizing CTG traces as normal, suspicious, or pathological
- Determining appropriate management based on CTG findings
Fetal Blood Sampling (FBS)
- Interpreting fetal blood pH results
- Determining appropriate management based on FBS results and CTG findings
Cord Blood Gas Analysis
- Interpreting cord blood pH and base excess results
- Identifying fetal acid-base disturbances
Fluid Balance and Urine Output
- Distribution of total body water (intracellular, extracellular)
- Normal fluid intake and loss
- Definitions of anuria, oliguria, and polyuria
- Clinical significance of abnormal urine output
IVGynaecological Investigations and Procedures
Imaging and Other Tests
Ultrasound Interpretation
- Identifying common gynaecological pathologies on ultrasound (e.g., ovarian cysts, fibroids, polyps, endometriomas)
- Understanding the appearance of normal pelvic structures on ultrasound
Tubal Patency Tests
- Understanding the principles of HyCoSy, HSG, and laparoscopy and dye test
- Interpreting the results of tubal patency tests
Procedures and Reports
Histology and Biopsy Reports
- Interpreting skin biopsy results in relation to vulval conditions (lichen sclerosis)
Urodynamic Studies
- Identifying urodynamic stress incontinence and detrusor overactivity on cystometry traces
- Understanding the principles of urodynamic studies
VStatistics and Research Principles
Clinical Research Data
Diagnostic Test Accuracy
- Understanding sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value
- Calculating sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV using a 2x2 table
- Interpreting the results of diagnostic tests in the context of prevalence
How to master Data Interpretation
- Review: work through each section systematically and understand the core concepts before moving on.
- Active learning: draw diagrams, build mind maps and explain concepts to someone else.
- Test yourself: try our free practice questions, then work through the data interpretation questions in the Uterio question bank.
